Potty Training

So.....anyone have any tips on potty training a boy that just doesn't seem to get it?

Today I tried out a friends tip of giving him a ton to drink then sitting with him on the potty while he watched his favorite cartoon. So I gave him a HUGE glass of juice and sat him on the potty, turned on Little Einsteins AND.....nothing. Not a thing. So I just keep putting him on there every 20 minutes or so and hoping something will happen.

Oh Pam, that looks so familiar! I did the same thing with both boys and it worked for us. What a great thing to have - a tv to watch while you go potty. Cute!

Just take him outside and tell him to pee on the tree!

Funny picture!!

I personally chose not to sit Owen down in front of the TV hoping to catch him peeing for a couple of reasons. Number one - I wasn't going to sit all there all day to notice when he peed (which you need to do so he understands what's going on) and Number 2 - I wanted to make sure that he was paying attention to the act of urinating, not the cartoon. Everyone has their own method. What worked for us is this:
I kept him naked from the waste down all day long and made sure we stayed home. Every thirty minutes I put him on the potty and he sat there for a few minutes. He had some special books about the potty that we were only allowed to read while he was sitting on the toilet. If I happened to catch him pee I made a HUGE deal out of it, clapping, cheering, stickers (I'm not a fan of giving food as a reward for a few reasons), etc. Then I would set the timer and in sixty minutes I would have him sit again. If he didn't pee then I wouldn't wait sixty minutes, I would try again in a half hour.
He WILL pee and probably poop on the floor using this method, but that's because you are training him. He doesn't understand what is going on. But I didn't put underwear on him those first few days because then I could more quickly notice when he was going and carry him to the toilet. Also, the fact that he was able to look down and see for himself what was going on helped him connect the dots. The first couple of days are messy. I then put him in cloth training pants so when he peed it didn't end up all over my floor. We also used a sticker chart, etc. Hope some of this helps.

If you don't mind teaching him to pee standing up, try putting a little dish soap in the toilet water so that when he pees it makes bubbles. Another thing that might help, if he's not too embarrassed, is getting Little James involved. Lukas potty trained in no time because he wanted to be like his big brother. Good luck! :-)

I wish I had good advice for you. You are like 7 months pregnant for the love. I'd plop him down in front of the tv, too. He just turned 2- he will get it! You're doing a great job.
